Drug Demand Reduction and Drug Harm Reduction are an inherent part of DOST Programmes, based on the Needs and Rights of various categories of clients in different settings. Each DOST Drug Treatment and Rehabilitation Centre is called a “Sakoon Kore Therapeutic Community.” Sakoon Kore is a Pashtu word meaning Serenity Home (in English). The Therapeutic Community is a drug treatment model based on the concept of self- help.
The Serenity Prayer is a universal prayer which is recited several times a day in the Sakoon Kore Therapeutic Community by its members i.e. the drug addicts and staff members who are all members and participants in the Therapeutic Community.
SAKOON KORE THERAPEUTIC COMMUNITY
GOALS OF TREATMENT AND REHABILITATION IN SAKOON KORE:
The overall goal is to identify drug addicts, motivate them and refer them for drug treatment and rehabilitation to Sakoon Kore Therapeutic Communities for residential therapy for 2 to 3 months. Aftercare and Follow up of patients is carried out for one year after discharge.
FOCUS AREAS
All Districts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and the newly merged FATA/PATA regions. However, DOST has an open door policy and no one who comes to our door for help is ever turned away. Subsequently, we treat clients from all over Pakistan and Afghanistan. All clients in the TC have equal rights.
SAKOON KORE THERAPEUTIC COMMUNITY
Sakoon Kore residential drug treatment and rehabilitation centres are established by DOST. Each Sakoon Kore is a Therapeutic Community, providing a supportive environment, a substitute family for clients who have not experienced structure, discipline and a sense of belonging in their lives. These persons existing in high risk drug using life circumstances on the streets are often victims of multiple forms of abuse. The TC offers them a healing environment where on the principle of self-help, they help each other and themselves in recovery. The duration of stay in the TC is from 2 to 3 months, but can be shorter or longer according to the assessed needs of clients.
The Therapeutic Community (TC)
The word Therapeutic means “Healing”, and Community is “a group of people who live together with a similar or shared purpose”. The TC is a self help healing community, acting as a substitute family and providing an enabling environment in which clients can discuss and share their concerns and provide support to each other. It is a conducive environment where clients look for solutions through the application of various life skills techniques and problem solving approaches. This includes developing peer educators in the TC who are selected from among the senior clients, to educate, motivate and monitor clients rights, maintain TC according to established rules and norms and provide requisite services and TC activities round the clock i.e. on a 24 hour basis.
TC PHILOSOPHY
The TC utilizes the community as the primary therapeutic vehicle to foster behavioral and attitudinal change. The client receives the information and the impetus to change from being part of a community. Clients are expected to be the contributing members. It’s a learning laboratory. The norms and values of the Therapeutic Community include:
Punctuality; Respect for each other; Honesty; Patience; Confidentiality; Trust; Hard working; Objectivity; Non-Judgmental attitude.TC has three main cardinal rules (No violence, No drug, No sex)
Clients in the TC apply the mutually acceptable formula of TRIS- TRUST, RISK, IDENTIFY, SHARE experiences, thereby through peer to peer interaction and support they act as mirrors for each other, reflecting their problems and findings solutions. This action is called SELF HELP by which clients help others while at the same time helping themselves.
